The American currency and Canadian currency systems are both based on the decimal representation to a portion of a dollar and include 1 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, 50 cent and one dollar coins.

Through the years the USA has used a few denominations that are not found in Canada such as the 1/2 cent, 2 cent, 3 cent and half dime denominations.  Today, one of the major differences is that the USA continues to use 1 cent coins whereas in Canada the use of the penny has been discontinued and our purchases are rounded to the nearest 5 cents.
